FareXChange Profile - Examples

Introduction

A number of examples, based on published fare information for actual networks, have been encoded to help explain how to use NeTEx to represent UK bus fare data.

Each example is intended to demonstrate specific features of different fare types; this page gives an overview of the examples, with links to more detailed pages on many of them. 

References to NaPTAN stop data, NPTG localities and NOC operator codes are generally used (Note however that where there is extensive underlying network

I???Metrobus Line 1 Trip

This example, based on the published fare sheet for Metrobus's line 1, encodes a zone-to zone single trip fare, where each zone comprises a number of stops.

> Metrobus Line 1 - Single cash trip:

  • Network defined as a number of zones, each with some stops
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, Child, , .
    • 50% discount rule for children.
  • paper ticket only.
  • On-board purchase only.

Zonal Pass fares - Metrorider

This example, based on the published fare sheet for Metrobus's Metrorider & Metrovoyager zonal passes for the Crawley Sussex area, encodes a Zonal pass.

> Metrorider Zonal pass - A day or season zone pass:

  • Available for 3 nested subzones
    • Crawley, Horsham, Redhill & Reigate within Metrovoyager zone
  • Available for different duration periods.
    • 1 hour, evening, 1, 2, & 3 day, 1 week, 1 month, 13 weeks, 1 year.
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, child, senior, student.
  • Group tickets available for families, groups and couples ("duo").
  • Different prices for three different types of media:
    • Paper ticket.
    • Mobile App.
    • Smartcard.
  • Online, travel shop and on-board purchase.
    • Distribution channels depend on media type and pass duration.
    • Only certain combinations of zone. duration, media and group ticket allowed.
  • Prices vary by zone, duration, user type or group, and media.
  • Validity period for use.

The example additionally encodes tariff and product definitions for other Metrobus products mentioned on the Metrorider fare sheet

> Metrobus Multi-trip carnet

A pack of single trips at a reduced price per trip.

  • Available in different pack sizes.
    • 5, 10, 25 units.
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, child .
  • Must be used within a given validity period.
  • Media - only available on smartcard .
  • Price depends on number of units and type of user.

> Gatwick Travelcard

A Metrobus zonal season pass for the Gatwick Airport area

  • Allows travel on a specified group of lines.
  • Availability restricted to Gatwick Area Employees.
  • Available for different duration periods.
    • 1 week, 1 month, 1 year.
  • Media: Only available on Smartcard.

The example additionally encodes tariff and product definitions for other multi-operator products mentioned on the Metrorider fare sheet

> Crawley PlusBus

A zonal day pass add on for rail ticket holders.

  • Includes three rail stations:
    • Crawley, Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges.
    • Zone defined by a NPTG zone with polygon for outline
  • Available for rail trip ticket holders as a day pass.
  • Available for rail season ticket holders as a period pass.
    • 1 week, 1 month, 13 weeks, 1 year.
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, child.
  • Purchase at stop or on-line.

> Discovery Day Pass

A multi-operator zonal day pass for the West Sussex area

  • 1 day only
  • Allows travel on multiple operators
    • Certain lines excluded
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, child, family group.
  • Subject to validity restrictions:
    • Travel Off peak limits on travel times in other boroughs.
    • Travel any times in home borough.
  • Paper ticket only

> English National Concession Scheme Pass

A multi-operator, zonal, long term pass for the West Sussex area

  • Zonal pass: Available for three separate zones
    • West Sussex, Surrey, Brighton & Hove
  • Allows travel on multiple operators
  • Available to registered disabled and pensioners.
  • Personal, valid up to five years.

> Easit Discount card

An employee discount card giving the right to lower prices on local bus and rail services.

  • Available for employees of member companies in teh scheme.
  • Valid for 1 year and three weeks.

Unit Section Trip - First West Of England, Line 48

This example, based on the published fare sheet for First West of England's Line 48 in Bristol, encodes a unit section based fare, where the price depends on the number of sections traversed (but not on any specific section).

> First West of England "Distance" single

- A single trip fare, based on Unit section.

  • Section tariff (where each stop is assigned to a section. Prices for
    • 0-3; 3-6; 6-9; 9-12, 12+ units
  • Single trip.
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, child, student.
  • Grouo tickets available:
    • families,
    • group off-peak only .
  • Off-peak time bands can be described with day types.
  • Different prices for three different types of media:
    • Paper ticket.
    • Mobile App.
    • Smartcard.
  • Online, on-board purchase.
  • Available durations and group tickets depend on media and zone.
  • Prices vary by number of sections used, and user type.

Multi-operator Zone pass - Travelwest

This example, based on the published fare sheet for First West of England, encodes a rail and bus zonal pass allowing a choice of zones in the West of England area.

  • Available for urban zones or whole region.
  • Available Zones:
    • BathRider, BristolRider, AvonRider and WestonRider.

A zone pass for specified zones.

  • Available Zones (some overlapping):
    • Bristol, Bath , Weston-super-mare, West of England .
  • Available for different duration periods.
    • 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year.
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, child, student.
  • Day pass Group tickets available for different categories
    • families, groups (off-peak only).
  • Definition of off-peak for group ticket as day type.
  • Different prices for three different types of media
    • Paper ticket.
    • Mobile App.
    • Smartcard.
  • Online, travel shop and on-board purchase:
    • Distribution channels depend on media type and pass duration.
  • Available durations and group tickets depend on media and zone.

> First West of England Zonal Multiple day pass carnet

A carnet of 10 day passes at reduced rate.

  • Available zones:
    • Bristol, Bath , Weston-super-mare, West of England.
  • Available for different duration periods.
    • 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year.
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, child, student.

  • Must be used with an overall Validity period.

> First West of England Zone "Unlimited" monthly subscription

Monthly subscription  - A monthly pass that automatically renews.

  • Available zones:
    • Bristol, Bath , Weston-super-mare, West of England.
  • Automatically renews ever month.
  • Adult only.
  • Available only as mobile app.

National Plusbus Products

This example, based on the NPTG data and the plusbus web pages, encodes national plus bus products in a modular fashion allowing for local exceptions as to operators and lines that are included in the pass .

> National Plusbus:

  • National set of bus pass zones based around rail stations.
    • Zone defined by a NPTG zone with polygon for outline
  • Available for rail trip ticket holders as a day pass.
  • Available for rail season ticket holders as a period pass.
    • 1 week, 1 month, 13 weeks, 1 year.
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, child.
  • Purchase at origin or departure stop or on-line.
  • May be bought separately from rail ticket.

Zone-to-Zone from GTFS data - First York

This example, based on an export of data in GTFS format for First York, encodes a Zone to Zone fare in extended GTFS format in NeTEx Each tops.

  • Available for
    • Single trip , Return trip.
  • Available for different types of user:
    • Adult, young person .

UK Common Resources

All the examples reference a common set of fixed values that can be used to classify and validate UK network and fare data. The common  elements are contained in a separate COMPOSITE FRAME supplied as part of the FareXChange  profile specifcation.

Implementations should embed and reference these values so as to be able to use automatic validation tools to check that only the indicated code values are used.
